Pueblo City & County / General Information

Pueblo Facts

The City of Pueblo is located in Southern Colorado approximately 115 miles south of Denver and 40 miles south of Colorado Springs, CO.  The area is regarded as located in the “Banana Belt” with semi-dry weather and receives roughly 14 inches of precipitation annually.  Pueblo tends to get less snow than other major cities in Colorado but is within 100 miles from major ski resorts.

The city’s population, according to the 2005 Census estimates, has a population of 103,495 and is the ninth post populous city in the State of Colorado.   The racial makeup of the city was 47.9% White, 1.6% Africa American, .04% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.5% from other races, and 46.9% Hispanic or Latino.

Pueblo is the hometown of four Medal of Honor recipients.  President Dwight D. Eisenhower upon presenting Raymond G. "Jerry" Murphy with his Medal in 1953 stated, "What is it...something in the water out there in Pueblo?  All you guys turn out to be heroes!”  In 1993, The City Council adopted the tagline "Home of Heroes" because it can claim more recipients with the Medal of Honor than any other city in the United States.  Pueblo’s Convention Center has a memorial to the recipients of the medal.
